Grindr is the world's largest social networking app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people. We hired their brand to help migrate a large Data Lake from Cloudera to Snowflake.
The Interview
We had a previous relationship with Devlane; we were impressed with the leadership and the candidates we interviewed.
We started with a single Data Engineer and have since added three more. We went from a lift and shift project to more general business data modeling support for new product features and a steady burn down of technical debt.
All their engineers are managed as part of our agile / scrum development process.
Devlane provides a flexible way to obtain high-quality engineers at a reasonable price. The engineers being in South America is a more favorable time zone for collaboration than other options.

Grindr is a location-based social networking and online dating application targeted towards members of the gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community.
The Interview
Early on, Grindr was seeing a lot of success and growing rapidly worldwide, but finding enough local talent in California to keep up with the app's expansion was proving challenging. To meet the growing demand and scale the engineering organization, we needed to augment our teams for iOS and Android, DevOps, QA, and core platform teams. We also had to enhance our backend systems to support the 4 million daily active users in over 150 countries while ensuring 99.99% platform uptime for customers across the globe.
To find the right talent, we evaluated several near-shore firms in Central and South America that could augment our engineering organization for technical proficiency, business English proficiency, and cultural fit. After a trial period of several weeks, we chose Devlane as the best fit in all categories while offering very competitive rates. Their developers truly felt like a part of our local team.
Our initial goal was to migrate the backend from Ruby on Rails to Java and extensively test the new backend to support real-time chat and geo-location-based matching and search engines. We were experiencing unreliable uptime and needed to scale it to handle the amount of traffic the application received.
To achieve this, we augmented our team with Devlane in multiple tech stacks, including mobile and backend developers. Following the Spotify Agile model, the teams were organized into 11 cross-functional, autonomous delivery squads. We also created a supporting DevOps squad with each member periodically embedding into delivery squads.
Our first challenge was to increase the backend API performance and its ability to support high user concurrency, so we began using jMeter and Blazemeter for load testing. After some time, the reimplementation was a success, and from there, we began filling in our open positions with Devlane. In less than two years, Devlane scaled to more than 30 engineers organized in full-stack autonomous teams, allowing us to have enough people to work on new features and reduce technical debt simultaneously. This led to completely re-platforming the backend while releasing new Android and iOS applications, resulting in an uptime improvement from 95% to 99.99% while getting from 2 releases per quarter to 30 releases per month. In just three years, our platform was able to scale from 1 million DAU to 4 million DAU.
Throughout the process, we were impressed with Devlane’s ability to scale and the initiative their engineering team took at all times. Their developers truly felt like a part of our local team. During the first year, there were times when we asked for several roles at once to be added to the team, and it took more time than expected to hire the talent. However, the quality of the engineers that Devlane found primarily compensated for the wait, and our more recent experience with their recruiting process has been much more streamlined.

Everlane is an American clothing retailer that sells primarily online, intending to practice transparent pricing. They wanted to scale their engineering team quickly, tapping into other labor markets. Their team was previously located in the San Francisco Bay Area, and hiring and retaining software engineers in that market took a lot of work. They figured out that hiring engineers from other markets would be beneficial to reduce our costs and augment their team fast.
The Interview
We hired Devlane to help us augment our engineering team. Initially, I was looking for data analysts, so they provided us with two resources for our data analytics team. These resources didn’t work on a specific project; they were brought in to augment the team we already had.
As we launched new projects, we realized it would be a great idea to bring in new resources from Devlane to work on projects from scratch. The first complete project that their team helped us with was creating an integration between our custom order management system and NetSuite.
Still, Devlane’s involvement has focused on identifying the software engineering skill sets we need for our projects. Throughout our engagement, they’ve helped us recruit and onboard these resources, overseeing the hiring process.Whenever we need additional resources, we provide them with details of the skill sets we need. Then, they source candidates and take charge of the initial recruiting process. We then get involved during the final approach to interviewing the candidates directly. Once they reach our approval, Devlane handles the initial onboarding process, and we take it from there and integrate them into our operations and projects.
They’ve found very skilled people in their talent pool that otherwise we wouldn’t have access to. Additionally, the speed with which Devlane has hired these resources has positively impacted our efforts. They’ve been able to find resources within 1 or 2 months, whereas we previously had technical roles open for several months.
Their resources are integrated into our processes, and we onboard them to our tools and workflows as part of the onboarding process. All the resources have quickly come up to speed with our project management style, ultimately working for us like any other team member.
Looking at them as a recruiting organization, their work is very high quality. Additionally, the quality of the work these resources provide to our project is of a high level as well — their work pairs with the work our internal resources deliver.
Devlane is very easy to work with, and they move quickly and find some of the best resources I’ve seen. The fact that these resources are a straightforward extension of our team distinguishes them from others.

A pharma consulting company helps manufacturers navigate government pricing regulations, reporting, strategies, and program operations, and they needed engineering services: They were looking for developers.
The Interview
We went with them because they had a Staff Augmentation model where the engineers would join our team and act as our full-time employees. Since most of their engineers are located in Central and South America, they could work in US time zones, which was also a benefit for us, plus they had very competent English levels. Overall, they were a good fit.
Devlane provides us with development and QA Staff Augmentation. They help us hire software developers and QA engineers. We onboard these resources and integrate them into our in-house team. We have three custom software applications for which the whole team is responsible, and Devlane’s resources are part of that team. They build features and resolve tickets, providing their equipment for work. We have two main points of contact: a recruiting manager who helps us with hiring and the engineering team manager.
We use Jira for project management. Depending on the project, we use an Agile two-week cycle or Kanban scheduling system. As for communication, we use Slack as our primary tool and have Slack, Zoom, and email. The team is responsive to our needs and requests.
Devlane has been very helpful, and their work is high-quality; their resources meet the standards of our internal hires. Although we’ve had 1–2 resources to provide feedback on and let one person go, for the most part, we’ve been delighted with what we get from the engagement. We don’t have individual KPIs for the engineers Devlane has provided because they’re a part of our team.
Devlane’s main strength is their attentiveness to how their staff is performing. They do constant check-ups, are always open to feedback and are willing to work with us. Moreover, they’re very communicative, understand our needs, and do their best to meet them. We’re also thankful for the quality of their resources; the engineers have very high standards.

We were searching for onshore sub-contractors and found Devlane as a possibility. We had a couple of meetings with your COO and other folks and then began interviewing candidates through them. The initial candidate we selected exceeded expectations in technical expertise, English-speaking communication, and the ability to work autonomously.
The work entailed digging into a mountain of deprecated services and code and coming out with an understanding that enabled us to maintain it for bug/security fixes and refactor it into something better. This is an ever-evolving process, and it will be next year (2023) that the final refactoring is mainly finished.
Two people were hired from Devlane. The first engineer was brought on for backend software development in Django / Python. Then later, another one was hired for frontend software development in React / Typescript but also old AngularJS / NodeJS / Express.
Our WoW started with Trello and moved to Jira for project management. All team members, including those from Devlane, participate in this. Conversations are held via Google Meet, and chatting is done on Slack. Both engineers have updated me with their status and left little to chance or surprise. Standup has been a critical meeting in keeping so many moving parts on track and going in the same direction, and Devlane team members have participated enthusiastically. Most of the mysteries within the code have been either resolved or at least uncovered by Devlane’s engineers and the rest of the team. We have used this to create milestones for finishing up refactoring the entire system and are well on our way to achieving a good portion of that by the end of 2022. This new infrastructure will enable us to focus more on client issues and product features to grow our business.
So far, candidate capabilities from Devlane have been top-notch — they are seamless members of our overall team. Also, communication has been quick, so all issues have been resolved without delay.

The Interview
We got in touch with Devlane from a referral of another CTO. The main deciding factor was flexibility and the ability to interview candidates based on our process. There wasn't pressure to make decisions blindly or with unreasonable deadlines, like some of the other firms I talked to.
We first discussed the projects and job descriptions with our Account Manager. As we got candidates from them, we had a two-step, two-hour interview process to select the engineers. They could close all the selected engineers in a reasonable amount of time at market rates.
We hired two backend engineers, one frontend engineer, and two QA Engineers from Devlane. Backend engineers have helped extend our login capabilities to support service-oriented architecture, where our new services and hotel app use their login solution and APIs.
The Frontend engineer helped us launch our WWW site with React and is actively involved in Analytics and A/B testing solutions. QA Engineers have been super valuable in working closely with our QA lead and maintaining a high-quality standard of our platform.
All the engineers have been producing high-quality work and have solid communication skills. They have indeed made a significant impact in helping us with our launches and quarterly roadmap goals. All are directly integrated with our front, backend, or QA team, and there is no us versus them regarding workflow. All team members are treated as full-time in-house engineers.
There is no pressure to hire anyone. There has always been a transparent and free flow of information and feedback, making my life easier as a hiring manager.

We wanted to expand our web development teams and worked with Devlane to find skilled engineers quickly. We were primarily looking to work with an agency in LatAm so that they could work during roughly the same hours as our US-based team to facilitate faster communication.
After speaking with Devlane and a few other agencies, we were pleased with how quickly the brand could present qualified candidates to our team. After an initial discussion to present our project and teams, we provided more specific requirements to Devlane in terms of the technical background that we were looking for with each position. After this step, they would begin their search process and present us with candidates who match our profile.
We were able to get the teams/projects staffed quickly, and their developers were able to onboard and contribute meaningfully to our projects within a short timeframe. The size of our team from Devlane has varied over time, but on average, we have worked with around five resources, all of them high-caliber, that have made meaningful contributions to some of our most critical projects.
The engineers have worked well with their respective teams, and they actively participate in team discussions and are always available if someone has a question about their projects. The management team is also generally swift and responsive to our questions and feedback, often getting back to us within minutes, even during the evenings and weekends. It is reassuring to have this level of support, and they are genuinely invested in our team and working with us as collaborative partners.
I’ve worked with other agencies where this was not the case, so the collaborative attitude that Devlane brings is a big plus.

We were expanding our team and hiring people within our engineering department. We engaged Devlane to get skilled engineers into the team to fill a gap while we expanded our team and hired our core employees.
Devlane provides development staff augmentation, and we have a rolling contract with them. We wrote a job description, and they sourced several candidates they thought might be a good fit for us and prescreened them. Then, we went through our internal interview process with the candidates; we gave them a technical challenge and an interview. We focused on the technical aspects rather than the cultural team fit because they would report to Devlane for anything HR related.
From there, we onboarded one engineer into our team. Devlane helped us with onboarding regarding the technical stock and the minimum versions of software we use. When working with us, the team ensured the engineer had the correct equipment and software. We handled the onboarding process for our product. Now, the engineer works directly with us as if they were one of our employees. They help with React Native development for our mobile app. The engineer picks up tickets from our product management team. These tickets have acceptance criteria, and they work through them to deliver against the requirements.
Currently, I work with two people from Devlane; the React Native developer and their Engineering Director, who acts as her manager.
Working across timezones is a significant aspect of our company, and they've been able to integrate into how we work and have open and transparent communication with us.
The Engineering director and I have a monthly check-in to ensure the relationship is going well and that the engineer's performance is as expected. The team attends every one of our calls. We use Slack for communication with them, where we have a company-to-company integration. Meanwhile, the engineer is integrated into our project management tools; we use a Kanban board, GitHub, and bug-reporting tools.
Although we can go over any topics we need in our monthly check-in, there have been no issues we've required to discuss. The process has been very smooth, and we hope to repeat it when we bring in more engineers through Devlane.

We were referred to them through one of our partners. We choose them because of: Great leadership team, excellent communication, developers with a wide range of expertise, and the 3-hour time difference from us in California.
Their team built our platforms (3) from the ground up. Native IOS & Android APPs (with full media capture) + Web Application + Remote Application. They've been integral to the process, from design and strategy to implementation. The team comprised full-stack developers and one lead engineer to produce all the work.
They meet with our team as needed and have a weekly meeting to review sprints. Our side sets the cadence with recommendations from our lead engineer. We used three different channels to communicate based on what the need was.

SpotOn is a cloud-based point-of-sale solution designed to help small to medium businesses in the hospitality industry streamline online payments, tableside orders, and fraud protection.
The Interview
We were looking for a partner who could provide high-quality staff with solid experience and personal standards. We needed someone who would not simply do as they were told but rather understand the goals of any given project and proactively engage in how to solve it best, make recommendations, challenge assumptions, and generally strive for an improved final product.
After studying similar companies focusing on a nearshore staff augmentation model, we selected Devlane through various personal references and recommendations. Our engagement with Devlane has included multiple teams comprising fully formed Devlane-based teams, and teams span SpotOn FTEs with Devlane’s staff.
These projects entail traditional SDLC concepts and concerns, such as sizing, planning, technical design, interrogatory feedback and detail gathering, edge case planning, automation, scalability, monitoring/logging/observability, traceability, and performance monitoring and capacity planning. Our teams can vary based on their work, as our focuses range from Android, iOS, Web, Go, PHP, and PaaS capabilities.
Devlane has been quite adaptable, primarily through the challenging times of COVID, considering our business caters very much to live venues (concerts, stadiums, arenas, etc.), notably as we pivoted to contactless initiatives leveraging mobile devices rather than line or server-based ordering. Devlane helped us quickly staff a team focused on web application experience leveraging camera scanning, responsive design, API integration, 3rd party payment integration (e.g., ApplePay, GooglePay), and various other vendor providers.
They’ve also identified potential performance coaching issues with their employees and worked to resolve them, keeping us well-informed and engaged. Devlane is its integrity. They say what they will do and then do it. When mistakes are made, they take ownership and put things in place to learn.
We share feedback bidirectionally and are open to hearing their concerns and ideas to alleviate us and see what they can glean from it honestly. Devlane seeks to understand our business and pressures, not just to forecast their contractual obligations through the year as many others, but how they can help and optimize.
And they do this not by trying to upsell us on more staff or services constantly, but rather to offer their expertise in fields similar to ours. Devlane has been quite effective with us, not only due to their near-shore and similar office-hour operations as our L.A.-based headquarters but also because of their engagement, quality of personnel, and staff experience. This has made them much more than just order takers or hands-on-key grinders and a much more valuable partner to us.
As odd as it may seem, we have no real complaints about Devlane. They have been a fantastic partner, and in a world where we have had significantly more bad vendor relationships than good ones, we are thankful to count Devlane in that "good" column and rely on them.
